Shawarma

High FODMAP (Avoid)Wheat pita, garlic sauce, onion

Is shawarma low FODMAP?

Shawarma is high FODMAP and best avoided during the elimination phase.

The wrap stacks the wheat pita, a garlic sauce like toum that is essentially whole garlic, and raw onion, with tzatziki adding lactose. A safer build serves the spiced meat over rice or a gluten-free wrap with a tahini-lemon or lactose-free-yogurt sauce and no raw onion.

FODMAP subgroups to watch

Shawarma contains fructans, lactose that can drive SIBO symptoms.

SIBO note

Watch this one for ISO (hydrogen sulfide overproduction). Shawarma contains sulfur compounds, and ISO patterns can be more sensitive to these, especially in larger servings.
