Butter chicken

High FODMAP (Avoid)Onion and garlic gravy, cream

Is butter chicken low FODMAP?

Butter chicken is high FODMAP and best avoided during the elimination phase.

Butter chicken is an onion-and-garlic gravy finished with heavy cream and butter (lactose), often with cashew paste. A safer build uses garlic-infused oil, tomato paste, ginger, and onion- and garlic-free garam masala, finished with lactose-free cream or coconut milk.

FODMAP subgroups to watch

Butter chicken contains fructans, lactose that can drive SIBO symptoms.

SIBO note

Watch this one for ISO (hydrogen sulfide overproduction). Butter chicken contains sulfur compounds, and ISO patterns can be more sensitive to these, especially in larger servings.
