Baked beans
Is baked beans low FODMAP?
Baked beans is high FODMAP and best avoided during the elimination phase.
Standard supermarket baked beans are built on haricot (navy) beans, so they are high in GOS, and most tins add onion and garlic plus sweeteners. Only a couple of tablespoons would be low, which is not how anyone eats them. A homemade allium-free version with canned and rinsed butter beans is the safer route.
FODMAP subgroups to watch
Baked beans contains GOS, fructans that can drive SIBO symptoms.
SIBO note
Watch this one for IMO (formerly methane SIBO). The fermentation pattern of baked beans tends to feed this specific bacterial pattern more than other SIBO types.
Low-FODMAP proteins to try instead
A single food is only half the story. Eating baked beans in a bigger meal? See how it stacks with the rest of your plate.
